Every Mom and Grandma need a talking swing.
What is a talking swing, you might ask? Well, a talking swing is a comfy cozy hanging porch swing in the front or back yard where you can sit with your child or grandchild and talk about all kinds of interesting things.
Talking swings can be so magical. Sitting and talking with a child, or young adult, on a talking swing is so different from talking with them at the kitchen table or couch. When just the two of you are gently swaying on your talking swing, a sense of peace and privacy engulfs you. It’s like you are in your own world and no one else can hear your quiet talking, even though the yard may be filled with lots and lots of other people. It’s incredible how kids feel so safe and will open up while sitting with you on a hanging porch swing.
When my children and nieces and nephews were little, my Mom had a porch swing in her back yard that she started calling “the talking swing.” When one of her grandchildren had a problem, or thought “Mom and Dad don’t love me as much as little Tommy or Julie – or whoever,” they would ask her if they could sit on “the talking swing” together. It was here where they told her all their problems, imaginary or not, and she got a chance to help them work through their big and little hurts or worries. It was their safe place and they knew they could say anything and it wouldn’t go any further. (However, when my Mom felt the problem or hurt was something the parents should be aware of, she gave us little hints to make sure we didn’t overlook something important to our children).
Years ago my husband bought me my own talking swing for Mother’s Day and there haven’t been many days that went by that I didn’t share that magical, peaceful place with my children or my husband. So many dreams were made, problems solved, parties planned, and heart to heart conversations were shared there.
Today, my daughter has her own talking swing that she sits on every morning with her little girl where they have “coffee time on the talking swing.” (Of course my granddaughter’s coffee is really milk with a few drops of coffee to make it look like coffee.) And though they don’t have many “heavy” conversations yet, they love having their own special place where they can sing, read a book or watch the birds in the sky while gently swinging on their own special talking swing.
I so wish every Mother and Grandma had a chance to experience these precious moments that will stay in their and their children and grandchildren’s hearts forever!
